What do the markings on the guide bar mean?

Buying a new saw chain? Read the markings on the bar and check the pitch, gauge and number of drive links. Here is what each specification means.

Bar length · 14″ / 35 cm

How long is the guide bar?

Length is often stated in both inches and centimetres. It refers to the nominal cutting length of the fitted bar, not the total length of the removed bar.

Remember: Do not choose a chain by bar length alone. Two chains for 14-inch bars can have different numbers of drive links.

Pitch · .325″ mini

Which chain pitch do you need?

Pitch describes the spacing of the chain’s rivets. Measure from the centre of the first rivet to the centre of the third, then divide that distance by two.

Remember: Read the full designation, including terms such as mini. The chain must be the correct type for the bar and the saw’s drive sprocket.

Gauge · 1.1 mm / .043″

How thick should the drive links be?

The bar groove width must match the thickness of the chain’s drive links, known as the gauge. 1.1 mm and .043 inch are two ways of specifying the same nominal size.

Remember: This is not the file diameter. Use the gauge to select the chain, not the round file.

How many drive links do you need?

DL stands for drive links. These are the lower parts of the chain that run in the bar groove. In this example, the chain needs 59 drive links.

Remember: Count the drive links, not the cutting teeth. The drive link count and pitch together determine the chain’s length.

Three specifications to match when choosing a chain

The correct pitch and chain type, gauge and drive link count. Also check the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure the chain is approved for your saw and bar.

Can’t read the markings?

Send us a photo of the bar and the saw’s identification plate. If possible, include the bar’s part number or the old chain packaging. The model name alone may not be enough if the bar has been replaced.

The bar’s part number can help identify it. It is not the same as the chain’s part number.

Replacing the bar itself? The bar mount and recommended bar length must also suit your chainsaw.
